Sensory/Autism Friendly Community

Summary

We offer an online on-demand neurodiversity course, "Spotlight on Autistic Minds" modestly priced at $97 for over 4 hours of videos with questions to reinforce the learning and a certificate of completion. All subscription funds go to the nonprofit working to build an autism informed healthy aging neighborhood community.

Description of Services

"Spotlight on Autistic Minds" is a mind expanding course that leads people through the experiences of neurodiverse people. This is just as appropriate for family members with a new diagnosis as it is for experienced teachers and therapists who have worked with these special people throughout their career. The longest videos are about 20 minutes and some are less than ten minutes. They are only long enough to make the point. There are 21 videos that are grouped by: Sensory sensitivities, Learning Styles, Communication, Routines and their functions and "Big Picture" categories. This is also suitable for employers and human resource specialists to help them understand the value and unique qualities of supports and how they help people to succeed. Each video is followed by 2 or three questions that reinforce the point of the video. We intend to provide longterm access to those who finish the course within 60 days so that they can review specific areas as needed to internalize these concepts. CTLS status is pending

Description of Services

Initiated in 1986, the Waisman Center Children’s Theatre (WCCT) enhances the arts for young children in Dane County by providing high quality, diverse, educational, and interactive live theatrical performances at a modest cost and in fully accessible settings. The Friends of the Waisman Center Auditorium is the indoor setting for the majority of the Children’s Theatre performances. With a formal stage and individual seats accommodating up to 250 people, the fully accessible auditorium provides an intimate yet informal traditional theatre experience. The WCCT features a variety of performers—magicians, singers, dancers, musical groups, “learning is fun” educators/performers, and professional theatrical companies. An important goal of the series is to include culturally and ethnically diverse performers and activities—from Cajun music to Irish Dancing; from Italian folk tales to traditional Mexican dances. Many of the performances showcase children as the sole performers or “stars” of the production, such as Dance Wisconsin, PlayTime Productions, and Trinity Academy of Irish Dance. By including these performances in the series, children are given inspiration and role models for expressing themselves through the arts.

Description of Services

Heartland Farm Sanctuary is a non-profit organization based in Madison, Wisconsin. Our mission is to inspire compassion for all beings by offering a safe, welcoming space where people and farm animals come together to experience growth, healing and connection.

Heartland Farm Sanctuary also offers Experiential Therapy. Experiential therapy isn’t “typical” therapy. Instead, it’s the ability to approach the needs of the participant in a way that allows them to express themselves through exploration, authenticity, compassion, creativity and the development of experiences where a real sense of belonging can occur.

At Heartland, therapy participants each work with a designated therapist– a certified or licensed professional– during their therapy sessions.  All activities are done with the guidance of their therapist, and with the intent of helping participants reach their therapeutic goals.

These goals may include increasing coping skills, learning to better regulate and express emotions, practicing self-advocacy, building social and community involvement skills, and setting boundaries.

Experiential Therapy at Heartland is a good fit for children and young people who enjoy being outdoors and around animals, as well as those who may struggle to express themselves verbally.  Our sanctuary’s unique environment and therapeutic experience often allow participants to open up and heal in ways that they’ve struggled with elsewhere.

Please note: Public and private visits must be scheduled ahead of time. Heartland is not open for drop-in visits.
