Autism and Feeding Challenges: Parent-Mediated Intervention Study

The UW Madison Occupational Therapy program is recruiting families with children ages 2-7 years with autism and feeding challenges to join a feeding intervention study. Here’s more information from the researchers:

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

  • 3 interviews about your child’s feeding challenges and behaviors
  • 24 Weekly 1-hour intervention visits to work on family feeding goals
  • 8 parent training sessions related to feeding offered online
  • Visits at the Waisman Center for assessment and intervention monthly when possible.
  • Surveys about your child and family and a 3-day diet record
  • Heart rate collected during Waisman Center visits
  • Follow up visit at 3 and 6 months after participation

Interviews, intervention sessions, and observations will take place over video calls and at the Waisman Center to reduce COVID-19 exposure. Once COVID-19 exposure is minimal, sessions may take place in your home.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE?

  • All participation will take about 6 months
  • 1 hour per week video session with a therapist
  • Families will be asked to use intervention strategies throughout the week during daily activities like meals and snacks.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

  • Parents of a child, ages 2-7 years, with a current Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis and feeding challenges.
  • Parent must live in the same household with the child at least 50% of the time, speak English, and live in Wisconsin.
